Oil on canvas 18" x 24" hardwood frame
Along the downeast coast of Maine, I sometimes see old wooden dories hauled up on the beach. Most of them are (or were) painted blue. Some were used for lobstering close to shore; a man could row one single-handedly, facing front like a gondolier. This trio in Stonington harbor still look seaworthy to me. This oil painting came together quickly after a summer of painting watercolors. I worked with thin layers on an untoned canvas (like the white of watercolor paper). The result is a satisfying inner glow in the shadows and reflections.
