This painting exemplifies why I have a love-hate relationship with plein-air painting. When I arrived at this spot at Fifield Point on the west side of Stonington, Maine, I knew the tide was going out, yet I stubbornly insisted on trying to paint the reflection, which was going, going... But I squinted at it long enough so it became seared in my memory, and I was able to pull it off despite the mud flat that soon confronted me. And the best part about painting plein air that day was the picnic my friend Robin brought--homemade BLTs!
